I hope in many ways....it really takes very little to bring a smile to someone, to let them know they are important. A smile, a quick phone call, a hug, words of encouragement, an offer to help them is some way...the list is long.
One of my favorite ways is....'snail mail'. Yep,,, I mail a note or a card to someone at least once a week. Yes, for birthdays or anniversaries, but I am not counting those. A friend of mine makes the best cards, she always gives me a box of them for Christmas and my birthday. I also scour the dollar store for some cute cards...and sometimes just a quick note does the trick. You would be surprise how finding an unexpected "hello" in your mail box can brighten someone's day!

It is wonderful to send someone an unexpected card sometimes. My Wanita started more than 20 years ago with correspondence with an elderly couple she met on holiday (before she knew me, that is). And about 15 years ago we didn't get any mail back. So we went to see her address and found out from her neighbour that she had been admitted to a nursing home with dementia. Anyway, we visited and she did not recognize us anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnyway my Wanita writes her a card every week, just a small hello, year in, year out. It got the attention of her daughter and now she is corresponding with her about her mum, who is in her high nineties now.
Just a small sign of how much a simple card can be appreciated.

That's a wonderful story...I often have said to my children and students...you never know how a small gesture can positively affect another person.

I know how thrilled I am, unfortunately I don't reciprocate all that often. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI know..with all the junk mail and bills...it makes my day to find something else in the mail box.

I love sending cards too, though I admit I have not done as much as I once did before children...thank-you for the reminder. :-) I always find you encouraging every time I visit here and every time you visit my blog with something positive to share :-) Hugs
ReplyDeleteThank you for the wonderful compliment...A lot of things take a back seat once the kids start to arrive. Enjoy it...they do leave eventually and you have time again..

I love sending and receiving 'just because' cards. Whenever I go to Dollar Tree, I scope out the cards...have a nice stack of them. Every so often, I will send each of my grands a card...they get the biggest kick out of getting mail. I try to do the same with my friends and other family members but don't do as well there. :(
ReplyDeleteWhenever my mom is feeling down and/or housebound (as she is now) I grab an inexpensive bouquet of mixed flowers at Walmart and take them to her...she enjoys the fresh flowers so much and doesn't fuss at me for the cost. ;)
Hugs and blessings...Cat
How am not surprised that you do this? I feel like we are sisters who have never met. YOur parents raised a wonderful daughter.

Its nice to both receive and send snail mail. More personal than an email or text. Lovely post Abby.

I know..and as a former english teacher..I do see the value in texting..but it sure is making proper grammar a thing of the past.

Oh, i love that! i think about doing it, - sending people snail mail cards - but don't. Sigh... And I buy cards often - at festivals or on trips. Maybe this will encourage me to do better with sending cards.
ReplyDeleteSet a goal for yourself...one card a month or a week..it becomes a habit.
